Action! - Spike The Power, Lee The RiotFollowing the very questionable results of his last remake, Oldboy, Spike Lee tries an attempt at another classic, this time Ganja & Hess. The result? I am unable to say for sure, since I have not seen the if I am to judge the film by the rumors that I read and heard about the somewhat random and bizarre style of the original, which made its producers trim it, then Lee does a great job. This film has something off about it from the beginning, although it is structured like any other movie, the performances are out of "Greener Grass" or something like that. As much as it is a love… Flips GANJA & HESS's ambivalence about black assimilation and the intrinsic colonialism of Western religion around to suggest the beginning of a new, culturally hybridized and maybe even anti-patriarchal diaspora. On the other hand it's just not that exciting. Personally I would have preferred this to be in a more stylized, confrontational register, but dismissing it as a timid cover seems short-sighted. Hess "That's an impolite question"Ganja "There the only ones worth asking"- Spike Lee Ranked 5x5 Directors Challenge Spike Lee 1/5 a sucker for stories where a vampire tries to live a mostly normal life. I just think it's interesting to see a drama that addresses how a monstrous malady impacts things like love, sex, work, etc... it's so much more interesting than the biting and sucking. In Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, Dr. Hess Green becomes a vampire and then starts a love affair with Ganja Hightower. Vampirism is paralleled with Christianity and living as a person of color and addiction. It's pretty great. Unfortunately I didn't like the original Ganja and Hess because… Hooptober Film 26 list hereSpike Lee's remake of Ganja & Hess is just awful. It is a re-imagining, a bold one, in which he takes every element that worked from the original and ruins it, and then adds extra crap for good of all, this film is incredibly ugly. The moody cinematography is replaced with horrible compositions, flatly lit like TV adverts. The visual language is incredibly uninteresting, but it keeps some of the jarring editing of the original, which without the connecting style is just awful. We then have a soundtrack that doesn't work at all, just noodling piano and bizarre needle drops that all have the feel of a low-key dinner party rather than the… As often in Spike Lee’s cinema the messier he gets, the more interesting are the results. It is not really surprising if one knows Lee – it pretty much is what one would expect a Spike Lee updates Ganja & Hess to Obama’s USA to be like – but has a lot of charms along the way. At its best it has a certain hard earned melancholia that is Lee’s own. Much like Red Hook Summer it reinforces how out of step with current cinema, Lee is. Dude has entered his late master who couldn’t care less what people think phase and all the better for that. I particular appreciate how this is self-councious about its own disconnect. Ganja & Hess was confrontational film from a radical artist, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is the work of someone genuine worried about matters of assimilation that also knows it confronts them for a rather safe upscale position. Spike, sit your ass down. Spike Lee could slap his name on literally anything and I’d still watch it… but this ain’t it chief Might as well face it, you're addicted to blood Hooptober 19Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a remake of cult 70s horror Ganja & Hess. Though it feels redundant, especially as it is often so close to the original, recreating scenes and shots. However Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is still a commendable effort, transferring over a lot of the same depth as the original. Ganja & Hess was a true art film and while Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is smoother and less experimental, it retains the arthouse approach. It does not streamline things or make things mainstream. It maintains the pretentious talk on blood, death, and desire. It keeps the fascination with African culture and uses black bodies artfully. It is a sexual and sensual film, with eroticism… Slow rolling and sultry, Spike Lee's "Da Sweet Blood of Jesus" is a vampire film about hunger, excess, redemption, and finding life in the shadows of death. Made of widescreen compositions, piano notes, and compelling ironies, Lee's film finds its lead, Stephen Tyrone Williams' Dr. Hess Green, infected by a literal blood lust and spreading that lust to a his mate. The tale is sound, though the production, as lovely as it can be, stretches the narrative out to its snapping point. Despite that languorous sense of self, the film can be stirring. It is a horror film nearly bereft of macabre imagery, and a drama dipped richly in blood and commentary. "Oh Lord God most holy, deliver them from the bitter pains of eternal death. The woman was a wicked woman, and she was dead in her own life. Yea lord, dead in the selfishness of her spirit. And the man followed her. Her steps led him down to evil, her feet took hold on death. Forgive him oh Lord, who knowest the secret of all hearts. Yea Lord, pity them who are dead, and give peace and happiness to the living."- I Walked with a Zombie"To face what we are in the end, we stand before the light and our true nature is revealed. Self-revelation is annihilation of self."- The Addiction Mentioned by Story by SIFF Can I ask you a favor? Can you share the message below? And accept Jesus Christ in your lives? Well its up to you. A remake of Ganja and Hess, this is one of Spike Lee's most cinematic of films, carefully lensed, well scored albeit with music that reminded me of Love, American Style - maybe that's the point, and intelligently acted. It's the antithesis, in fact, of his previous film, Red Hook Summer, which had its good points but ultimately looked like a student film. I found Da Sweet Blood of Jesus hugely entertaining and thoroughly engaging - and c'mon, how can you dislike a film dedicated to the memory of Christopher Lee, or one so clearly in debt to the works of Jean Rollin? Reviewed by Seth_Rogue_One 4 / 10 Peculiar, the worst Spike Lee movie I've seen and I've seen most of them Spike Lee is one of my biggest favorite directors so I was interested in watching this regardless of the low ratingAnd I wanted to like it I really did, the opening shot is amazing it has some superb break-dancers break dancing outside to a smooth Bruce Hornsby piano score, looks beautifulBut that montage really has nothing to do with the movie itself, the movie is about an upper class arts collector who by some circumstances get a thirst for bloodMind you, if you're expecting a typical vampire horror you will probably be let down it's not really that type of movieWhat type of movie it is though I can't really describe, it's just a peculiar movie that I had a hard time figuring out what it was trying to be and what it was trying to sayThe dialogue is not bad but more-part of it doesn't sound realistic to what a person would say, often sounding more like theatre monologues basicallyActing overall is pretty wooden but that could be an intentional thing being that the people in it are very posh and pace very slowIt has some above average scenes separately but together it just doesn't get it's right flow and your often sitting wondering why or wondering what the point of it all is, and by the end of the movie at least I still have no ideaFor the record I have not seen the movie GANJA & HESS of which this movie is a remake on, perhaps I would understand this movie better if I'd do that but if one has to watch something else to understand the movie you were watching than that would mean that this movie failed IMOHonestly it felt like Spike Lee didn't put his whole heart into this project which is a shame, since it was funded by his biggest fans via a Kickstarter campaign Read more IMDb reviews Nachrichten Trailer Besetzung & Stab Pressekritiken FILMSTARTS-Kritik Blu-ray, DVD Bewerte ich sehenKritik schreiben Inhaltsangabe Ein Film über Menschen, die süchtig nach Blut sind.
